Case Study: SuperValu

Facility type: Grocery Store, Archbold, Ohio

Work Performed: Interior & Exterior Lighting LED Retrofits

Background

The SuperValu is a locally owned, full-service grocery store located in Archbold, Ohio.

Situation

In 2017, the SuperValu was seeking to improve the quality of the lighting inside the grocery store and also to reduce the energy costs of both their interior and exterior lighting.

Solution

Wholesale Lighting assisted the SuperValu with rebate applications for both the interior and exterior lighting projects with First Energy’s Energy Save Ohio program for LED lighting upgrades. This lighting rebate program is available to commercial power customers of Toledo Edison and Ohio Edison. Wholesale Lighting selected a “plug & play” LED T8 replacement tube that would work on the existing T8 instant start fluorescent ballasts that were in the interior fixtures. The LED replacement tubes provide a brighter, better quality light for the main sales floor which provides more desirable illumination of the products on the shelves. The LED plug & play replacement tubes were well suited to this customer’s situation because they are very easy to install. Deployment of the LED replacement tubes was exactly like fluorescent relamping. This allowed the staff of the SuperValu to perform the installation themselves. This meant that there was no need to bring in an electrical contractor, and kept labor costs associated with the interior lighting project to a minimum. This also served to minimize disruption to the SuperValu’s normal business operations. For the exterior wallpacks and parking lot pole-mounted floods, Wholesale Lighting selected LED corncob lamps to retrofit the existing fixtures. The LED retrofits replaced the existing metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps and also eliminated the HID ballasts from those fixtures. This resulted in a substantial energy savings, and will also eliminate the maintenance costs of having to hire an electrical contractor to relamp the exterior fixtures and replace ballasts over the life of the LED corncob lamps.

Results

The energy savings from the interior and exterior lighting retrofit projects resulted in significant savings on the electric bill. The interior project reduced the energy consumption of the store lighting by 50%. The exterior project reduced the energy consumption of the parking lot lighting by 75%.
